Located in Balboa Park, the nation's largest urban cultural park, encompassing 15 major museums, renowned performing arts venues and the San Diego Zoo, the Conrad Prebys Theatre Center replaced The Old Globe theatre company's stage with a new, upgraded, state-of-the-art facility, for which Project Management Adivsors, Inc. (PMA) managed the discretionary approval process, design and construction on behalf of The Old Globe. The new theatre retains the same intimate environment and size of the previous "theatre-in-the-round," while offering enhanced technical and staging capabilities. Seating is provided for approximately 250 patrons in the new theatre, with improved circulation for both actors and audience members.
The theatre center also includes a new education center and an outdoor seating pavilion. The total building area is approximately 25,000 square feet with a multi-tiered wing for dressing rooms and aristic support spaces, which serves all three of The Old Globe theatres. A new 15,000 square foot entrance plaza unifies the theatres and administrative functions, providing enhanced reception and event space. The theatre center design complements The Old Globe's main stage venue and seamlessly integrates into Balboa Park.
