Jewish Council for Youth Services, JCYS, is an independent not-for-profit agency serving the needs of families throughout the Chicagoland area and suburbs. Since 1994 PMA has built a long-standing relationship with JCYS over the years. Based on a series of successful projects, when planning began in 1999 for a significant expansion of their facilities at Camp Henry Horner in Round Lake, Illinois, PMA was retained to assist with the management of the project, including the design and construction phases.
Red Leaf Village, part of Camp Henry Horner and the focus of the camp expansion, has served the special needs of people with disabilities for over 30 years. New facilities for the year-round program included a 9,200 sq.ft. 40-bed dormitory facility, a 1,060 sq.ft. arts and crafts building, a new entrance drive and 5,000 l.f. of new pedestrian walkways, including a new footbridge over the detention basin. PMA helped JCYS create a list of add alternates, which allowed the project to grow as new sources of funding were identified. Red Leaf Village reopened in June 2001 in time for a full summer camp schedule. The dormitory building, named Leibow Lodge, also contains a 1,000 sq.ft. common room, a screened porch, full bathing facilities and a serving kitchen. In addition to the design and construction, PMA assisted JCYS with the procurement and coordination of owner-direct contracts for the septic system installation, landscaping, fixture and window donations and installation of project signage.
